What is it?
Mixers and DSPs are used to route and/or process one or more sources before sending the signal to an amplifier. Mixers are typically used in simple setups and are mainly analog. For more control over the signal, a DSP (digital signal processor) or mixing console is often used. DSPs are digital processors commonly used in fixed installations with pre-programmed settings, while mixing consoles are frequently used in live performances or situations requiring frequent adjustments.

Usage
Mixers, DSPs, and mixing consoles are commonly used in audio installations. Depending on the application, one type of device may be more suitable than another. For mixers, DSPs, and mixing consoles, it’s important to understand what the device needs to do. Key considerations include the number of sources, outputs, routing capabilities, and processing options. Additionally, the method of control is crucial: mixers are usually operated from the front panel, DSPs are primarily controlled via network or control panels, and mixing consoles are typically adjusted directly on the console.
Installation
Mixers and DSPs are often installed in a 19” rack as their settings are generally fixed after setup. Mixing consoles are typically placed on a table or flat surface in the room where the source is located, allowing for easy adjustments.
